Through International Volunteer HQ, I volunteered with a Cambodian NGO who connected me with an orphanage in a rural western Cambodian. The orphanage is locally operated and supports approximately 20 children between the ages of 6 and 19; it receives no funding outside the Cambodian government. During my placement, it was the job of myself and another volunteer to teach the children the basics of the English language (around school hours) and put together a syllabus that could be used once our placements had ended.
Due to the language barrier and range of proficiency amongst our students, my colleague and I relied on creative and image based methods to teach and help visually reinforce the lessons. During this placement I learnt the value of images in communication and their effectiveness as an equaliser among a varied audience.
