Roaming Join

About the project

The series of brooches created in collaboration between Nellie Peoples and the fashion designer, Alice Sutton, for Fashionable Early Canberra, the spring fashion parade (1st September, 2012). It was part of Fashionable Early held at the Gallery of Australian Design (8 August – 20 October, 2012).

The brooches were a developed from revisiting the Structure Series. This was the starting platform. From here, the lines of the form were replaced and translated into facets. The forms were constructed from a flat plan of joining ellipses. The sheet material was then rolled and folded to form the pod-like pieces.

The collaborative concept developed from the need to push the traditional boundaries and relationships between jewellery and garment, exploring how they interact. Over three works created by Alice Sutton, the garments evolved and the brooches grew and expanded slowly, in fact, taking over the garment’, all the while playing a game of concealing and revealing.
