Opera Australia is Australia’s national opera company,
presenting some fourteen operas annually in a repertory environment, musicals,
regional tours, outdoor events and concerts. As Australia’s largest performing

The Company is seeking a full-time Communications Manager. The
role of Communications Manager has been created to bring publicity / media
relations, social media, content creation and industry partnerships under the
control of a single individual.
The role sits inside the Marketing department and reports to the
Marketing Director. The Communications Manager will be empowered with a high
degree of autonomy to think big and deliver even bigger.
The Communications Manager needs to be a visionary who can
walk-the-talk, delegating when appropriate, but not being afraid to get their
hands dirty. The role offers an

Developing and delivering the strategic vision of Opera Australia’s
communications to the media, industry (arts and tourism), government and

Managing an existing team that includes a Publicity Coordinator, a Digital
Content Editor, a Video Producer, plus contract publicists and interns during
busy periods. Furthermore, the Communications Manager will be given a budget to
hire a permanent mid-level Publicist to assist with media relations.
The Communications Manager will also be the primary point of contact for
external publicists that manage Opera Australia’s co-productions, such as
musicals Anything Goes and Jekyll & Hyde.
With input from the communications team, developing creative ideas and
finding newsworthy stories that can be rolled out across editorial, social
media, content, events and on-site activations.
Be the final sign-off for all communications material.
Be the top-line contact for media, ensuring interactions with journalists
are always handled with the upmost professionalism and result in mutually
Working with the non-communications members of the marketing team to ensure
consistent timing, messaging, imagery etc.
Manage some areas of communications / marketing crossover e.g. developing
opening night invitations.
Oversee and guide communication team staging of events including media
calls, previews and opening nights.
Work with the development and philanthropy departments to ensure sponsors
and donors are integrated into messaging where appropriate.
Facilitate buy-in from other Opera Australia departments (eg. creative,
cast, production) to ensure communications success.
Crisis management planning and delivery.
Full budget management for the communications team.
Managing campaign reporting.
Attend and contribute to high-level senior management meetings.
At least 7 years of direct media relations
experience, with the ability to demonstrate a large body of work. Experience in
a creative industry or tourism (and hence having existing media contacts in
that sphere) and exposure to events will be highly regarded.
At least 3 years of experience in a communications
or PR management role including budget management and crisis management.
Experience working with tourism bodies and/or
government departments will be highly regarded.
A working knowledge of utilising social media as a
measurable communication tool. Hands-on experience with Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram and YouTube are essential. Experience with WordPress and Photoshop is
A creative mind with a demonstrated ability to take
an idea from brainstorm to delivery.
Exceptional writing and editing skills, including
media materials, corporate documentation and reporting. This should be
complimented by confident verbal communication, including in front of the Board
and at large events.
Superior interpersonal skills. The successful
candidate needs to be able to confidently manage up and down. The
Communications Manager must be an expert at maintaining the delicate balancing
between being assertive yet warm and approachable.
