This role would suit a junior with 1-2 years’ experience, however newly qualified graduates with exceptionally creative portfolios will also be considered. As a junior designer, you'll be involved in creative problem-solving and producing graphic design and visual communication work for a wide range of projects and media.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Design and execute original works
  • Supporting the team throughout the execution of tender and proposal submissions, architectural competition submissions, event and marketing collateral, media campaigns and award submissions
  • Producing attractive and effective designs for all media
  • Design presentations in both InDesign and PowerPoint
  • Help maintain files: versions, formats and project names within established framework
  • Image handling, resizing, filing and management for digital and print use
  • Output files for print and digital specifications
  • Provide creative and original ideas for internal and external communication initiatives
  • Work closely with the Senior Designer to develop and design proposals, concepts and final artwork
  • Take direction from Senior Designer and Leadership Team
  • Communicate with senior team members to receive feedback and guidance
  • Liaise effectively with suppliers and other team members in order to meet deadlines

This role would suit someone with motivation and drive to be the key support role within a fast paced environment and to lead on the projects assigned.

The following experience and skills are desired:

  • Have an understanding of MSO tools (Word, PowerPoint, Excel etc.)
  • Image and formatting text experience
  • Digital design skills that can be applied to responsive websites, eDMs, digital banners and presentations
  • Knowledge and understanding of best practice in design standards
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent communications skills
  • Able to organise multiple projects with tight turnaround and timelines
  • Ability to work independently and also within a team environment
  • Willingness to learn and collaborate with teams

To be successful you will have:

  • A degree (or equivalent) in communication design
  • A strong portfolio with examples of various design projects demonstrating a problem solving approach
  • Proficient in Adobe CC: Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign (other applications a bonus)
  • A general understanding of how a website or eDM is built (html, CSS, JavaScript). No coding or development skills required

Your work should be original and display a high level of ideation and craft behind the design. We are looking for someone who's keen to learn but also shows creative initiative and displays a high level of understanding design problems, so if this sounds like you please apply!

We are asking all applicants to design a poster for a fictitious brief as part of your application.

The Brief

Overview Grimshaw is hosting an Affordable Housing talk with industry leaders and peers in the Gallery space of their Carlton Offices. The discussion will centre on the topic "Accommodating Homelessness: how we must work together to help shelter our vulnerable citizens".

Guests will include other architecture practices, universities, government representatives and local developers. Grimshaw will also be unveiling a cubby house it has built for a local charity at this event.

You need to design one poster that creates a new brand identity for the event, but also is considerate of Grimshaw as the host. Feel free to decide on the event dates, location, etc. yourself.

Scope: Don’t stress on budgets or showing intensive graphic techniques, we’re looking for great ideas and simple, beautiful design execution. We will also want to see that the result suits the style of the topic being discussed (which will be how we evaluate whether or not the response is ‘on brief.)

The skill here is in showing restraint, attention to detail and inventive conceptual or production approaches blended with a sense of the audience and topic being discussed in an open format.

Expectation: You don’t actually have to print the poster so don’t let that hold you back. We would like you to create a digital presentation with the sort of information you might use to pitch this idea to the client. One concept will be sufficient.

Think mood boards and/or thumbnails, examples of any process you’d use and digital representations of the one potential design outcome. We don’t want you to spend ages on this – we want to see what you can do with a day or two so we haven’t allowed a huge amount of time for this reason.

Only submissions that supply all four items (not exceeding 10MB ) will be considered for the role:

  1. Resume
  2. Cover letter
  3. Design Portfolio
  4. Response to the design brief

Unfortunately due to a large volume of applications we receive, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

Grimshaw is an equal opportunities employer. We welcome people from all backgrounds and recognise that in order to be successful, we need to create an inclusive environment where everyone can realise their potential and succeed.
