About Robyn

Robyn Lea has established herself as a top international photographer over a 15-year period, extending her repertoire to directing TV commercials and writing over the last five years.

Lea's love for storytelling and ability to connect with her subjects has seen her collaborate with a diverse range of personalities and celebrities including Willem Dafoe, Isabel Lucas, Claudia Schiffer, Sarah O’Hare (Murdoch), and genius Russian conductor Valery Gergiev on location at the Kirov Opera in St Petersburg among others. Her work has been published in some of the world’s top tier magazines and sites including Vogue Italia, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue Living, Vogue Entertaining & Travel, Time Magazine, Gourmet Traveler, The British Airways Magazine, GCasa (La Repubblica Magazine), Velvet, La Maison Française, The Australian Financial Review Magazine, the Qantas Magazine, and will be featured on the upcoming cover of US Travel + Leisure in January 2013.

Lea's sensibilities for art and the human experience manifest in a powerfully and often moving aesthetic. This is evident not only in her portraits and stills, but in the international ad campaigns she has directed in conjunction with agencies DDB, Clemenger, Grey, Lowe Hunt, The Campaign Palace, George Patterson, Y&R, JWT and Publicis Mojo. Highly respected amongst her peers, Lea is often invited as guest speaker to address groups such as the industry body ACMP and DDB International advertising agency.

Commissions often take her all over the globe; most recently to a private Chateau in France for a coffee table book by Penguin Books and Milan/Lake Como to shoot a fashion film and stills of Italian fashion designer Antonio Berardi for Peroni Nastro Azzurro that debuted exclusively on Vogue Italia’s site.

Based out of New York since early 2012, Lea was drawn to art and photography as a child growing up in the tiny rural township of Stawell in Australia. Lea’s drive and passion for the arts saw her move to Milan as an 18-year-old to assist top international photographers. She later joined a studio and launched herself as a photographer; eventually catapulting to the highest level of shooting editorial fashion with Gucci, Antonio Marras, Luisa Beccaria, D&G, Borsalino and Bulgari. Though not born in Milan, the city embraced her and almost every door in the fashion, art and design world remains open to her.

Most recently, Lea has been working on a book project in Milan as an extension of her deep and thorough knowledge of the city. Part cookbook, fashion journal, art work and personal visual diary, 'The Milan Book' features high fashion images showcasing current and archival masterpieces by Versace, Gianfranco Ferré, Salvatore Ferragamo, and Alberta Ferretti among others, portraits of artists and designers in their studios, recipes shared by Milan’s top chefs and stories of Lea’s life in the fashion capital. Working with historic brands such as Giorgio Armani, as well as an array of emerging Milanese creatives and designers, she has opened up the many facets of a notoriously private Milanese world to the reader; often considered impossible to access.

The first edition will be released as an individually handcrafted limited edition of 100 and each book will be signed and numbered. Later, 2500 will be printed as a standard edition.

Guided by the meaning and narrative inherent to visual communication, Lea’s work mirrors her lived experience, and in addition to photography and directing, also includes art. Having shown nine solo exhibitions of her work, Lea's latest solo show was held at Parliament House Melbourne. Involved in countless group exhibitions, Lea's work has been shown in St Petersburg, Moscow, Zimbabwe and the Powerhouse Contemporary Art Museum in Sydney. Currently, select pieces are traveling throughout Asia in an exhibition, which was launched in November 2010 at Bangkok Design Week.
I am currently working on my new website, so keen an eye out for it soon.
