In March 2010, the Ear Science Institute Australia implemented the Cheers for Ears program. Cheers for Ears focuses on noise-induced hearing loss as a result of entertainment noise, particularly from personal music players. With mounting evidence that an increasing number of school-aged children are suffering from hearing loss as a result of noise exposure, it was important to target children in upper primary school. The core part of the program is a one hour session that is delivered to children in year five to seven at school and includes interactive activities designed to encourage safe listening habits. Cheers for Ears is continuously seeking new and innovative ways to expand the reach of its important hearing health message, one being the creation of this mural through the support of Chevron Australia and local artist Chris Nixon.
“Music and sound play such an important role in my inspiration and practice as an artist which is why I was so passionate to collaborate on the Cheers for Ears project. The mural concept is inspired by the foundations of sound and the instruments that channel the form, focusing on using symbols to represent the source of sound and the progression of hearing devices over time and how these can contribute to cause hearing damage. I've attempted to represent the complete path from the creation of a sound to the end user and how this can be manipulated through the listening device to promote safe listening. I was influenced by the style and colour palette of classic hand painted signs in order to create a piece of work that relates to the youth while remaining relevant to an older audience” - Nixon
Over the five days taken to install the mural, the City of Subiaco supported a short documentary to be made to increase the impact of the wall. The six minute film includes time-lapse technology that covers the artwork being completed from start to finish and is used to promote the Cheers for Ears program on the website, through social media and in schools.
