The University of Johannesburg’s Visual Arts and Design Research Centre, in collaboration with the editors of The New Encyclopedia, held a colloquium titled "Johannesburg and the Megacity phenomena". As a means to document and archive the academic papers, discussions, site-presentations and photographic essays exhibited at the colloquium, the University commissioned a hard cover publication for distribution.
The publication needed to remain academic in tone whilst innovatively representing the urban subject matter being documented. The grey exposed craft board used on the cover of the publication represented the intrinsic urban aesthetic one would associate with a man-made city environment. The spine of the book was deliberately left exposed in order to emphasize the presence of disjunctures and fissures within the fabric of urban South Africa.
