I am an intern at an Australian travel magazine called Travel Weekly. Here I am learning a wide range of different skills, writing, editing, proof-reading, contacting people for quotes, researching, using different computer programs, updating the website, looking into how the magazine is put together and published.
I was one of five editors for the UNSWeetened Literary Journal, a creative writing journal UNSW puts together each year to showcase student’s talent. This role allowed me to read through a variety of different writing styles, edit them to a publishable quality and work together in a team.
I was one of three editors for the UNSW Student Cookbook which is produced annually. I edited the recipes that are submitted by students so they are clear and concise. This role allowed me to enhance my editing skills and demonstrated that I can work quickly and effectively.
This position has given me a large amount of experience in writing for a magazine and how a magazine comes together, something I am particularly interested in. It has also helped me with writing for something I am not familiar with, the mindset of men and articles about surfing and men’s health etc, particularly with putting myself in the mindset of men as well as the layout of magazine articles.
While on exchange at Swansea University I worked as a casual writer for the University's newspaper. Working for the Waterfront gave me confidence in myself as a writer, as well as valuable experience in writing in different styles and about different topics.
In this position I wrote fortnightly inspirational articles for an online psychology magazine: YouandMe. This volunteer job has provided me with constant experience with writing; it has made me use my imagination, and has developed my skills as a writer.
