The Works is a Collaborative Design consultancy housed within the Master of Communication Design at RMIT University. The Works mission is to provide an educational environment that facilitates students’ participation with Design Entrepreneurship for Innovation and Social practice. Through an immersive studio environment students will develop, design and create participatory design projects with business, community and government. The focus is for students to create projects that have deep meaning and make a positive contribution to society. Using Design Entrepreneurship students create projects that are sustainable and provide a platform for business innovation upon graduation. The Works is a boutique program attracting students who have passion and drive to use the experience to develop entrepreneurial projects, start up professional design studios and lead collaborative design for innovation and social practice. The student cohort is diverse, consisting of students from across the globe and from a range of design disciplines. The Works is a multifaceted experience with the studio made up of designers at various stages of their careers. Students will engage with professional practice through specific courses that investigate real-world issues faced by designers and develop a deep understanding of contemporary design practice. The aim of the program is to produce students who can lead innovation and provide informed insights into future directions of the industry. The program better prepares students for the growing challenges of designing for the future.
