Special Olympics Australia

Transforming lives of children and adults with an intellectual disability

Overview

Special Olympics Australia provides year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with an intellectual disability.

People with an intellectual disability represent the largest disability population in the world yet they are often misunderstood, rejected or simply ignored and that's why Special Olympics exists.

We know that people with an intellectual disability can achieve their best and participate as respected members of the community, when they are given a fair chance. So we provide a welcoming environment where athletes are accepted and supported. At Special Olympics people with an intellectual disability are encouraged to get fit, develop new skills, make friends, recognise their abilities and believe in themselves.

We provide sport for all people with an intellectual disability, regardless of their skill level, whether they just want to participate in their local area or aspire to a gold medal in international competition. With almost 200 events per year, training all year round, and self-development initiatives off the sporting field there are plenty of opportunities for athletes to pursue their goals and be their very best.

With limited financial support, Special Olympics relies almost entirely on volunteers who work tirelessly to deliver the program to over 4000 athletes throughout Australia. They do a great job but our vision is to reach out to more of the 500,000* Australians with an intellectual disability who deserve to enjoy sport and the benefits that go with it.
