About Max

Max Mannix is a screenwriter and director who recently returned to Australia after spending 14 years in Japan. He is highly acclaimed, and has won a range of prestigious awards.

While living in Tokyo, Max wrote his first screenplay, an adaptation of SUN TZU’S, THE ART OF WAR, the classic military treatise written in 500BC. The script was sold by his US agent at Creative Artists Agency.

He then co-wrote, fight choreographed, and co-directed, DANCE OF THE DRAGON, starring Jason Scott Lee (BRUCE LEE). Shot in Singapore, the film won Best Film and Best Director awards at the West Hollywood International Film Festival.

Following this, Max wrote the original screenplay for Cannes Film Festival, Un Certain Regard Jury Prize Winner, TOKYO SONATA, directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, the film also screened in Official Selection at Toronto and New York. It was the winner of Best Asian Film at Osian's Cinefan, the Grand Jury Prize in Chicago, the Jury Prize at the Asiatica Film Festival in Rome, as well as winning Best Japanese Film at the Osaka Film Festival, and both Best Film & Best Screenplay at the Asian Film Awards.

Max then went on to write, direct, and fight choreograph, the Sony Pictures action film, RAIN FALL, starring Gary Oldman. The film had a wide release in Japan and topped week-to-week domestic DVD sales in Japan.

More recently, Max wrote ABC's docudrama, THE EUREKA 13, as well as the Japanese screenplay, MY BLUEBIRD which is presently in pre-production, as well as penning a 4 part TV series titled THE TOKYO TRIAL for Japan's NHK which recently wrapped production and will release in December 2016.

Max's writing projects in development include, RIALTO, with Gary Oldman to Executive Produce, YELLOW EARTH, an Australian/Japanese project with Guy Pearce attached to star, JOHN JOSEPH with Roger Donaldson signed to direct, and an untitled Japanese feature film project.

Recently inducted into the Asia Pacific Screen Academy, Max lives in Australia.
