I am a design business director, a designer, a creative director and a strategist. I have run design businesses. I have worked with clients, managing their projects and directing the design and production teams handling them. I have worked as a marketing communications specialist. I also direct and edit videos and I compose music. I enjoy working with great creative and business teams, where I can put my knowledge and experience to good use.
I am always open to discussing new opportunities.
I am originally from the North of England and now live in Sydney. I studied Typography & Graphic Communication, at the University of Reading, under some of the industry's best teachers including Ralph Beyer (lettering specialist), Michael Twyman (communication design specialist), Ian Dennis (designer of the National Theatre logo) and Ken Garland (design and social crusader). It was with Ian Dennis that I had my first job as designer and art director working on The Hexagon Theatre and The Sunday Times Wine Club, amongst others. I also ran my own independent freelance business working for publishers Routledge and John Wiley.
I found working with clients, very easy, and was soon utilised as account manager, designer and art director at the design companies I worked for. I built a long lasting relationship with Siemens plc, as a client, which resulted in me joining them as Marketing Communications Manager. Here I handled brochures, technical literature, advertising campaigns, media planning and buying, media and PR, exhibition and event management, corporate video production, direct mail and sales campaigns. Reporting directly to the executive boards, I negotiated, and managed the spend on various marketing budgets. I also learnt the importance of building trust and strong relationships with colleagues, external agencies and stake holders.
Maintaining Siemens as a key client I started my first design company, Print Co. I applied the same high level of respect and collaboration to my colleagues here, as I had at Siemens, and built a strong design team. And I applied that same philosophy to the relationships I built with my clients. These included Siemens and Astra Zenecca. A break in Japan allowed me to indulge my love of photography, video, art and music. On returning to the UK, I took on a consultancy role with Print Co.
Moving to Sydney in 2000 I joined Impress Design as business development & account manager. I quickly moved into the role of director, alongside two fellow directors. Between us we shared the management of the business, our clients and the creative direction of our design team. Clients included Caltex, Sydney Water, Perpetual, Meat & Livestock Australia, Strata Unit Underwriters, Opportunity International Australia, Finite and Taronga Zoo. For family reasons, I reduced my involvement in Impress Design and formed Space and Sound Studios. In addition to design this has allowed me to offer video production and music composition to my clients.
