WHO ARE WE?
Who Gives A Crap is one of the fastest growing eCommerce businesses in Australia. More than that, we’re one of this country’s fastest-growing social businesses. We sell eco-friendly toilet paper, tissues and paper towels (with more products to follow) and use 50% of our profits to build toilets for those in need. As much as we love toilet paper, the reason we’re in business is the impact we’re having on the world—to date we’ve provided sanitation access to almost 120,000 people.
We have a fully distributed business with all team members working remotely (i.e. from home or a co-working space) most of the time, with a few scheduled ‘office days’ each month. We currently operate in six time zones with team members across four continents... and we’re just getting started.
WHAT WE NEED
We’re looking for a mid-senior conceptual designer. Someone not only incredibly good at making things look good, but someone who also loves coming up with ideas. We want to develop our brand and we’re looking for someone who wants to boss it. As they like to say in buzzword land, we want a self starter – this job is what you make of it.
So more specifically, what will you be doing? We've built the brand quickly over the past few years, so although we're quite proud of it we recognize it needs to be made more consistent and, well, better. We'd love for you to guide us through the process of clarifying our brand guidelines, and then work closely together with you to bring some love to every aspect of our brand. There will be a lot of day-to-day design tasks (designing social media posts, for example), loads of medium-sized projects (new posters! business cards! improving individual pages of our website!) and more than a few large projects (let's redesign the website! help us design new products!*).
*Sorry for all the exclamation marks. We're just really excited about all this.
Australian based with a preference for Sydney or Melbourne. While you’ll be working remotely, your closest team members will be there, and for this kind of role, working side-by-side is handy.
• A killer portfolio – ideally, we’d like to see examples of where you’ve taken an idea and applied it to various executions, not just a hot piece of branding
• A wide breadth of experience including digital, branding and print media – UX skills are a big bonus
• At the very least you should be an expert in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and standup comedy (Just kidding about the last one. Sort of.)
• Have great time management skills – we don’t wait for nobody
• Be a decent, friendly human who knows how to communicate (easy, right?)
SKILLS & STUFF
You take initiative
We’re looking for someone who can learn our approach, think quickly and take the initiative to suggest new ways in which we can use design to deliver delight. We want to make cool things, so bring us your best ideas!
Design is baked into everything we do, and while we love beautifully set type and getting the details right, we also believe firmly in testing ideas quickly before we invest time in making things perfect. There's no point in investing weeks of time in designing something that doesn't end up working. So if you like fiddling with type for weeks on end, this probably ain’t your thing, but if you like putting lots of ideas out into the world, come join us!
You think through the whole experience
Rather than just thinking through the individual element you’re designing, you think about the entire experience it fits into. You understand form AND function – so white space is nice, but can our customers read the copy?
You ignore design briefs
Not really, don’t ignore design briefs. But if you have a great idea that doesn’t fall squarely in the brief, we still want to hear it. By the same token, there’s going to be some everyday grunt work that you just need to get on with – hey, we all gotta do it.
You speak developer-ese
We want someone who can communicate with our web developer(s), and who understands how websites work.
You like stuff
We want someone who is passionate about the world, preferably social impact and environmental issues. Oh, and toilet paper. Just kidding, that’ll come later – trust us.
Think you’re a good fit? Woohoo! Upload your portfolio, a cover letter and CV by visiting the link attached to this post. Deadline for application is 3rd June, 2016.
Bonus points if you can tell us a really good joke. Bonus bonus points if that joke is about toilet paper.
