Job Description:
Sculpture by the Sea is an annual series of free to the public outdoor sculpture exhibitions held at Bondi (Sydney) and Cottesloe beach (Perth). Every year our Bondi exhibition features over 100 sculptures and is visited by an estimated 500,000 people. The exhibition has become a major feature on the Australian cultural calendar, attracting participating artists from all around the world.

Sculpture by the Sea is seeking to appoint a team of enthusiastic and self-motivated individuals to join the Education Program staff for our Bondi exhibition (dates include Thursday 18th October to Sunday 4th November, 2012). The role of the Sculpture by the Sea Educator is to conduct Exhibition Tours for primary and secondary students, including students with special needs. Educators may also be required to assist with Artist-led workshop activities. Tours will be run every weekday for the duration of the exhibition (based on bookings) and will be offered as either 60-minute discussion-based sessions or 90-minute sessions inclusive of a practical art-making activity (max. 15 students per Educator). Opportunities for weekend workshop shifts may also be available.

The Exhibition Tours are designed to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the 2012 exhibition, the history of Sculpture by the Sea, contemporary sculptural practice in general, and an in-depth tour of the works installed at either the Tamarama or Marks Park sections of the exhibition.

For those Educators with experience in audio described tour guiding and/or working with students with special needs there is the opportunity to be part of our Access Program’s Tactile Tours. Facilitating discovery through dialogue and touch, the Tactile Tours provide an informed and interactive experience for visitors with disabilities and their carers.

Reporting to the Education Manager, Educators will be provided with research material ahead of the exhibition and will be expected to prepare their own tour content. Tours ideally comprise of an introduction to the exhibition, followed by interactive discussion on several artists works, and a 10-15min practical activity (90min sessions only) using basic materials and techniques in response to one or many of the sculptures visited on-site. Whilst the tours are to be set within these parameters, it is the task of the Educator to develop the content and art-making activities of their own tours and adapt to the needs of each student group.

The role requires an energetic, confident and creative individual who enjoys working with a broad range of audiences and ages in a fun and dynamic environment. Our Educators will need to be punctual and flexible with excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work both autonomously and as a team member.

Essential Criteria

Educators will be paid a set rate of $70 per tour and $50 per workshop (assistant role), and can expect to be allocated two shifts per day where possible. This will of course depend on school group bookings and Educator availability.
