In response to growth of the organisation in recent years, the Board seeks to strengthen the MCA with the appointment of a Chief Executive Officer as it enters the third decade of its successful existence. The CEO will be responsible for the daily running and development of the MCA within the boundaries of strategies, priorities, policies, programs and projects developed and agreed with the Board and program director(s).
The position involves high level project management, strategy and business development, administration, marketing, and fundraising. The CEO ensures the best possible outcomes and balance between the activities of the MCA across its main spheres of interest: community, education, and industry, demonstrating efficiency, effectiveness and inventiveness within the constraints of limited resources. In this way, this central role contributes to optimal engagement, relevance and impact of the organisation at large.
The position can be located in Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne. Candidates in other areas are also welcome to apply, but must be able to travel.
Key responsibilities include:
Organisation and stakeholder management
- Secure engagement from the broadest possible range of key organisations and individuals in the music sector
- Expand and maintain confidence in the relevance and value of the MCA for all stakeholders
- Maximise the potential for sector-wide collaboration on key issues and optimise returns to stakeholders
Ongoing projects and business development
- Manage and oversee ongoing projects in close collaboration with the program director(s)
- Generate and evaluate proposals for ongoing business and new project development within the MCA’s core brief with the objective of effective cost-sharing or securing continuing earned income
- Develop or support additional ventures that are consistent with the purpose of MCA and produce a profit
Fundraising
- Plan and implement a fundraising program, focusing primarily on sponsorships and donations
- Coordinate Board and councillor support for this program through the MCA’s extensive network
- Support the formulation and submission of grant proposals by the program director(s)
Marketing
- Oversee and ensure effective communication and promotion
- Market memberships, services, and business products more generally
- Communicate advocacy propositions to the public in collaboration with the program director(s)
HR and administration
- Lead the selection, contracting, supervision, supporting, and assessment of MCA staff
- Develop, formalise, and record administrative procedures and protocols
- Oversee the management of the membership program and subscriptions
Financial management
- Formulate and oversee annual and multi-year budgets
- Perform and record financial transactions
- Prepare financial reports and evaluate financial operations
IT management
- Select, maintain, and develop IT systems
- Oversee IT officer or contractor
- Ensure a strong, up-to-date and attractive online presence for the MCA
Selection criteria:
- a substantial track record in one or several key areas of activity of the MCA: community, education, industry
- a proven capacity to develop and implement viable strategies which return benefit to diverse stakeholders
- strong grasp of administrative processes, HR procedures, IT and financial management
- proven ability to manage complicated projects with diverse partners from the non-profit and for-profit sector
- experience in successfully leading individuals and teams in delivering outcomes on time and within budget
- inventive and entrepreneurial attitude coupled with highly evolved communicative skills in speech and writing
- well developed skills in communication, marketing, and preferably fundraising
- evidence of successfully dealing with complex relationships and issues
- a passion for and strong affinity with the full gamut of musical activities and interests in Australia
