Designing Out Crime was a University team project completed in collaboration with the City of Sydney. The project required that the team design a possible solution to the issue of alcohol related violence on Oxford Street, Sydney.
From observation, one of the risk factors that could incite violence was pedestrian overcrowding occurring on the pathway between The Spectrum and The Gaff. This was a result of having over 5 popular nightclub/bar destinations within a close vicinity. People would wait outside of destinations for friends, to chat and to smoke.
The proposed solution was to design an extended temporary sidewalk that would facilitate social behaviours whilst deterring alcohol related violence. Next to the overcrowded pathway was a bus lane closed after 7pm and instead used as parking space. We proposed that the extended sidewalks be placed in these bus lanes to create more space for pedestrians to socialize and to commute.
