Giles is an independent designer currently based in Sydney, specialising in graphic design, branding and creative strategy.

He has been creating brands and communication pieces for more than 14 years. Over the past two years Giles played a key role in the rollout of large-scale event branding projects for EventsNSW including Vivid Sydney, Crave, Vivacity and new event, Parramasala.

Whilst always passionate about good design, he is even more interested in design for good, and the power that good design has in effecting positive change. Giles holds a 1st Class Degree in Graphic Design, a Masters Degree in Sustainable Architecture and Alternative Energy Studies, a diploma in Permaculture Design, and has completed a Masterclass in Ecological Footprinting.

He has worked internationally for recognised agencies that include Michael Nash Associates (London), Moon Design (Sydney), The WHAM Agency (London) and more recently Gen.a (Sydney). His clients have included 3, Orange, Hutchison Whampoa, Sydney Theatre Company, Harvey Nichols and Qantas.

Recent projects have included brand development and strategy for Events New South Wales and its major festivals Vivid Sydney and Crave Sydney. Other work has focussed on applying design and brand principles to organisations involved in international trade development and social change projects, including clients such as Fairtrade International and the International Trade Centre in Geneva. This work was completed whilst Associate Director at the Sydney agency Gen.a.

    Following the completion of my Masters Degree in Sustainable Architecture I moved back to Sydney to join my old friend (and former owner of Moon Design) Nick Morgan, in his new agency Gen.a.

    Gen.a is a strategic communications and design consultancy defined by strong creative ideas infused with ethical and sustainable principles, creating design and communication platforms that inspire and activate change that has a positive impact on organisations, communities and the people within them.

    I had great challenge on working within a new an stimulating area which included projects for countries, cities and organisations ranging from Fairtrade International and Botswana Export Development and Investment Authority, to Events NSW.

  • The Wham Agency
    Senior Designer
    2003 - 2007

    WHAM is a brand building company owned by Hutchison Whampoa Limited, that create and deliver new brands worldwide. Major clients included 3, the world’s first 3G mobile network, Powerstick, Peroni and INQ.

    Following the launch in Australia I became part of the lead international team, at the WHAM Agency in London, that developed and then managed the roll out of the 3 Mobile brand internationally, encompassing 10 countries.

    This project lasted a few years and included the complete brand experience across multiple medias and in a variety of different cultural contexts. Applications included; retail store design, environmental graphics, packaging, digital media, advertising, brand guidelines, user interface design and handset/online animations.

    Moon Design is a reputable multidisciplinary creative agency in Sydney that has helped to create and support some of the most memorable brands in Australia.

    I spent 3 and a half years with Moon during a very rapid growth period where I Moved into a Senior Creative position looking after clients that included 3 Mobile, The Sydney Theatre Company, Qantas and Orange.

    1996 - 1998

    Michael Nash Associates are small design agency initially famous for record designs that included Massive Attack, Seal, Neneh Cherry and INXS.

    The client base also included notable names from the world of fashion such as Jasper Conran, Issey Miyake, Jil Sander, Philip Treacy, Joyce, and Patrick Cox.

    In the early 90s the company was commissioned to design the own-brand packaging for Harvey Nichols Food Hall, an association that continues today, and has embraced the Fifth Floor, OXO and Prism restaurants. Projects have been completed for the National Portrait Gallery, the New Art Gallery Walsall, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, H&M, Margaret Howell, Egg, Asprey & Garrard, David Morris, Space NK, Ruby & Millie, Toni & Guy, Flos, Cassina, Boots, Phaidon, 4th Estate Books, Schrager Hotels, Marks & Spencer, Heals, and the Royal Mail.

    This was my first proper job after leaving art college. The mainstay of my work in the studio was designing record covers for labels that included EMI, Sony, Island Records as well as working on packaging for Harvey Nichols and other high end fashion houses.
