CREATIVE SYDNEY 10X10
Michelle McCosker & Alasdair Nicol are Sydney-based creatives working together as Reef Knot as well as maintaining our own private practices. Our work spans disciplines from public art and scultpure through design, advertising, scenic art and event & production management.
MICHELLE McCOSKER
Michelle McCosker is a visual artist and curator fascinated by the relationship between art, the everyday and the ordinary person. In her early twenties Michelle was one of the main curators and founding directors of Knot Gallery where she developed a distinctive ‘installation’ aesthetic in the face of conventional artwork display in a bid to be non-exclusive and engage non-traditional art audiences. Her own personal artwork style is textile, assemblage and found-object based often using recycled or re-purposed materials.
As one half of artist duo Reef Knot, Michelle has directed a number of public art and installation works including I Heart Kings Cross (2009) for City of Sydney’s Art and About festival and winning a SMAC Award, City of Sydney’s Live Lanes projects The Sky is Falling! (2008), Windows to Imaginary Places (2007) and most recently Council Clean Up (2010). For Underbelly Public Arts Lab & Festival Reef Knot presented works in the Carriageworks foyer, Zen and the Art of Train Riding (2007) and Hot Air (2008). These pieces consolidate an aesthetic of combining artforms to create immersive environments. Other recent creative direction and curation include the music stage and foyer decor at the Finders Keepers Markets (2009-10), Hills Hoist stage decor (2005-07) and sculpture garden (2005-08) at Peats Ridge Festival as well as knitted installations for Good Vibrations Festival (2010) and Forbes & Burton Cafe (2010).
Michelle also maintains a weekly blog offering her insights into the Sydney public art world as well general arty stuff she loves! www.toucandance.blogspot.com
