Al is a copywriter by trade and has also filled a number of creative director rolls.
He joined Lintas, Sydney as a writer in 1982. His first CD position was with Lintas Hong Kong, in 1989. He subsequently held ECD positions with Lintas in Melbourne, Sydney and London.
In 1997 Crew returned to Sydney to become ECD of BAM-SSB Dentsu, Sydney and then set up his own agency Collins&Crew with Simon Collins.
In June 2000 Crew returned to Hong Kong in the position of Worldwide Creative Director on the Cathay Pacific account at McCann Erickson. At the end of 2002 he was asked by Mark Buckman (then Chairman of McCanns Australia), to return to Sydney as McCann Erickson National Creative Director. A position he retained until 2005.
In recent years Al has created, written and helped produce 3, 13 episode television series all of which have aired both locally and globally (XYX/Lifestyle Australia, Discovery Channel Asia, and the Fine Living Channel if the US amongst others).
He is currently a major shareholder and board member of Mixing With The Best Pty Ltd, a company involved in the production of television programming and associated websites and databases.
He has worked on accounts including Unilever, Coca Cola, Honda Australia, General Motors, Rover UK, Proton Australia, RTA Drink Driving, VIC ROADS, TAC Victoria, Sydney Water, J&J, Commonwealth Bank, Newcastle Permanent, Virgin Financial, Micro Spoft, Boots, NEC, Lindemans, Rosemount, Tullochs, Penfolds, Jim Beam, Canadian Club, P&O, Royal Viking Cruises, AAPT, TAB Float, Cathay Pacific, Park and Shop HK, Grace Bros Retail, Suttons Holden, Hanes Clothing,
Allan was awarded the Interpublic Group of Companies’, Paul Foley award in 1992 for creative excellence by an individual within the IPG Group. (16,000 employees in 75 countries.
In 1992, Lintas Australia was named ‘Advertising Age international Agency of the Year’ based on the campaigns created under Al’s tenure.
In 1993 Al was voted Best Creative Director by BRW .
1n 1997 he was Australia’s television judge at Cannes.
He has presented advertising related speeches in Sydney, New York, Rio and San Paulo.
