Visual Arts, Stencil Art
Curator, Event Manager, Writing
42BELOW™ Month of Street Art was an exhibition comprised of two shows, Futureshock and Public Access, both celebrating the stencil medium and its relevance both in the street and in a gallery context.
The artists in this exhibition were all very much established as practicing artists, exhibiting their work in galleries and some making a living from selling art. However they also continue to create work on the street; the unbridled freedom of creativity this environment offers holding an irresistible appeal. Whether on a gallery wall or under a motorway overbridge, making a political standpoint or purely decorative, their work has an undeniable aesthetic appeal that is as comfortable in the gallery as it is in the face of everyone on their way to work in the morning.
This exhibition wasn’t about the street as a physical location but as an attitude towards the way art is displayed and viewed, that allows for the freedom to create and view art in an accessible environment. 42BELOW™ Month of Street Arts aim was to promote an alternative to the established system, and to create a more accessible platform for art appreciation.
