Counting the stories. For a human to count to 7 billion out loud, it would take 200 years. Life's too short. Literally. SBS was founded on the belief that all Australians, regardless of geography, age, cultural background or language skills should have access to high quality, independent, culturally-relevant Australian media. Through SBS Radio, SBS Television and SBS Online, we tell the stories of humankind in more languages than any other broadcaster in the world; at last count, more than 68 languages on radio, more than 60 on television and more than 50 online. NOBODY ELSE DOES IT LIKE WE DO. SBS is driven by a Charter that demands we "provide multilingual and multicultural radio and television services that inform, educate and entertain all Australians and, in doing so, reflect Australia's multicultural society". Our Charter ensures a commitment to our audience and to making a difference. Beyond that, our passion and creativity force us to think past the mundane into ground- breaking ideas and quality content, whatever the platform. Working at SBS we are bound together by a vision for content that has meaning and makes a difference. “MULTICULTURAL” - THE NEW DEFINITION In the 21st century, multiculturalism means more than bringing the cultures of other worlds into your home. It is reflecting back to us the increasingly multicultural spirit of our own community. At SBS, we are committed to telling stories that help us understand who we are, where we have come from and what we can become. We are committed to inspiring all Australians to explore and appreciate our multicultural world and contribute to an inclusive society. SBS FUTURE In this fast-moving media world in which we live, SBS faces two key challenges: - More competition for audiences, more competition for content, and more platforms and devices = fragmenting audiences. - More people from more places, more languages and more cultures in Australia = greater cultural complexity. To meet these challenges we have two clear goals: 1. Deepen Australians’ engagement with content that reflects our Charter. 2. Grow our audiences. We’ll achieve these goals by producing and acquiring distinctive content. By expanding SBS services across all of our platforms. By ensuring we have the capability, people, resources and support of our stakeholders. All this to progress our wider mission: ensure all Australians have access to high quality, contemporary SBS that fosters a broader sense of Australia and its place in the world. OUR PEOPLE We employ nearly 800 people across SBS Television, SBS Radio and SBS Online. Our diverse workforce comes from more than 100 ethnic backgrounds and speaks about 80 languages. Our people work across 3 main sites – Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra – in a diverse range of positions and professions: those that make and find great content – Journalists, Producers, Editors, Presenters, Graphic Artists, Programmers, Schedulers to name a few – and those that enable great content to reach all Australians – Developers, Engineers, Technicians, Operators, Subtitlers, Publicists, Audience Researchers, Sales Reps, Coordinators, Administrators, HR people-people, Accountants and finance roles. You don’t have to speak another language or come from a non-English speaking background to work at SBS, though many of our jobs do require proficiency in languages other than English. (For example, almost all our radio producers create programs in languages other than English, and our Subtitlers prepare English-language subtitles for TV programs in languages other than English.) What you do need is a passion for SBS, what we do – telling stories that inspire all Australians to explore our multicultural and multilingual world and contribute to an inclusive society – and how we do it – as expressed in our values: creativity; collaboration; diversity; and respect. How will we look, sound, smell, feel and taste in 100 years, when Australia's racial make-up, language, food, culture and technology have been even more profoundly influenced by 150 years of immigration? Take comfort in the thought that however much SBS changes, we'll still have the same core purpose that drives us in the early 21st century - to reach all Australians, explore the real, multicultural Australia and connect us in all our wonderful, complicated diversity.
