I began my career in the 1980’s with string of traditional advertising agencies – Ogilvy and Mather, Young and Rubicam and MDA Mattingly, perhaps not in the capacity one might expect – as an in–house photographer. At Mattingly my key responsibility lay in the direction and co–ordination of campaign photography for the Myers/Grace Brothers account.
A little disillusioned with the excess of the big agency system, in 1987 I established a photographic studio in the heart of Melbourne and began working directly with clients, offering corporate and editorial photography, campaign strategy development and copywriting services. My clients during this period included Australia Post, The Regent Hotel, Dunlop and Sportsgirl.
In 1990 I moved to Sydney, and through a mutual client, joined forces with designer Marco Cicchianni to establish Cicchianni Malone P/L (becoming Advertising Designers Group in late 2001). Together we took it upon ourselves to try everything at least once – from making video clips and short films to building websites (it was 1994 remember!) to national ad campaigns.
Most notably, in 1998 the agency was recognised by B&T magazine as Australia’s “Ethical Agency”, through our commitment to sustainability, social change and responsible industry practice. This refreshing reputation led to great opportunities and winning the Prime Minister’s Environment Award for Innovation and Excellence in Marketing for our work in the promotion of Green Power.
Fast forward to 2006 and Vince Frost asked me to head-up his Sydney Studio’s biggest account, Tourism Northern Territory, plus contribute strategy and copywriting across the entire business, including other key accounts such as QANTAS, Macquarie Bank, Sydney Opera House and Kakadu National Park. Amid all this we turned Frost Design ‘Carbon Neutral’, the first Creative Agency in Australia to do so.
Which leads me to where I am now, the eve of 2010 – my own business, again, but this time it’s just me – focusing on my best talent – strategic planning and copywriting. Influenced by business models of Jim Collins, the planning logic of Jon Steel and John Griffiths and the strategies of Sun Tzu, I am still helping clients, creatives and the consumer all get along, and am the most happiest I have every been.
