Hellen has a staunch history of maintaining living spaces where art, performance and music are in the throes of creation. From the 80’s, squatting the notorious Gunnery building in Woolloomooloo, to the Gearco in 90’s Erskineville, she set her sights on this current space in 2006:
The Hellen Rose Schauersberger LabOratorium, here in her spiritual homeland of Surry Hills.
Hellen’s previous spaces have housed and supported many artists and musicians. From Tex Perkins, Kim Salmon and Wendy Sharpe at the Gunnery, to Bain Woolfkind, Brett McMahon and Adam Cullen at Gearco. In 2006 she moved in solo to level 1/17 Waterloo St, Surry Hills, needing a space to create in. True to character, she has supported many artists and musicians simply by providing a versatile space and sincere encouragement. The LabOratorium has seen and survived international acts such as No Age, Vivian Girls, La Quiet, The Night Terrors, Lucas Abela & Schlimmfluch Gruppe, theatre groups including Suitcase Royale, Dr Brown and Kingies. Artists, Ben Cahill, Heesco Khsnaran, Philip Barnes, The Reverend Kriss Hades and many more…
Within the onslaught of booze halls bereft of real live entertainment, thick with canned ‘hit’ song groans through wallpaper oblivion, Hellen watches Surry Hills culture killed slowly by cash rather than supported by it. Hellen loves the $500 license idea but would rather not bother as the arts themselves are what people focus on here when they BYO. At the end of 2008 a friend whom she met fighting police and bureaucrats to save the Gunnery moved into studio 7: The acclaimed Australian artist, George Gittoes. They became partners again and combined studios to create The House of Heaven and Hell. The two have been working and travelling ever since. Hellen has handed the reigns over to Ford Sarhan and Samuel Trotman for 2012, while Hellen and George are filming Love City in Afghanistan. She will also be touring her highly successful one-woman show: Dangerous Curves and Hair Pin Bends.
The Hellen Rose Schauersberger LabOratorium is a space run for artists to create, display and connect in the guts of Surry Hills.
